LIT libraries
Very little code reads LIT, and almost all of it was written by reverse engineering. There is no LIT library on NuGet, Maven, PyPI or crates.io. Your options:
| Language | Library | Read | Write | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C/C++ | ConvertLIT (openclit) | yes | DRM re-sealing only | the reference reader, GPL-2.0, handles sealed and (with keys) owner-exclusive DRM |
| Ruby | Cabriolet | yes | yes | pure Ruby, BSD-3-Clause, no DRM support, young project |
Other code that handles LIT, but isn’t a library you can install:
- calibre has a LIT reader and writer in Python (
src/calibre/ebooks/lit, GPL-3.0). It’s not published as a package; call theebook-convertcommand line from your program instead:ebook-convert book.lit book.epub. - libmspack decompresses LZX, the compression used in LIT, but it doesn’t parse LIT files.
For most programs the simplest route is to convert LIT to EPUB once with ebook-convert or clit and then use an EPUB library.

- LIT libraries for C/C++ Open-source C code to read Microsoft Reader LIT eBooks: the openclit library from ConvertLIT, with build notes and examples.
- LIT libraries for Ruby Read and create Microsoft Reader LIT eBooks in Ruby with Cabriolet, a pure Ruby library for Microsoft compression formats.
