HEIC libraries for Python
Pillow can’t open HEIC by itself. Two good options:
- pillow-heif adds HEIC/HEIF to Pillow (
register_heif_opener()), and also has its own API for multi-image files, thumbnails, depth images and 10/12-bit data. The wheels include libheif with HEVC decoder and encoder, sopip installis enough on Windows, macOS and Linux. The most common choice. - pyvips binds libvips, which reads and writes HEIC through libheif. Faster and lighter on memory for batch conversion and thumbnails, but needs a system libvips with libheif and an HEVC decoder.
- pillow-heif pillow-heif adds HEIC and HEIF support to Pillow in Python. Convert HEIC to JPEG, save HEIC, read Exif, thumbnails, depth images and all images in a file.
- pyvips pyvips reads and writes HEIC images in Python through libvips and libheif. Convert HEIC to JPEG, make thumbnails, save HEIC with quality and bit depth.
