HEIC libraries for Ruby
- ruby-vips binds libvips, which reads and writes HEIC through libheif. It’s fast, uses little memory and is the default image processor of Rails’ Active Storage, so it’s the usual way to handle HEIC uploads in a Rails app.
MiniMagick works too when ImageMagick is built with libheif; it calls the magick command line.
Either way, the system libheif needs the HEVC decoder plugin (libheif-plugin-libde265 on Debian and Ubuntu).
- ruby-vips ruby-vips reads and writes HEIC images in Ruby through libvips and libheif. Convert HEIC to JPEG, make thumbnails, save HEIC and handle iPhone uploads in Rails.
